"I want these paintings to evoke a feeling of something intimate and private. Secrets interest me. I like it when I discover eccentricities about ordinary people that others do not know about. Looking at these images we feel perhaps like a voyeur. Should we be looking?
I also like the juxtaposition of a theme that is seen as adult against settings that are familiar, even domestic. I incorporated warm comfortable colors, lazy postures and lackadaisical facial expressions to create in these images a sense of the commonplace. This lends a sense of innocence to a theme that is often viewed as mature.
My intention is not to shock or offend, but be warned that this show will have some adult content that you may not consider appropriate for younger audiences."
Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, Betsy now spends most of her time in Monticello, Utah but also considers the tiny town of Paradox, Colorado her home. She juggles her time between being a mother of five and being an artist. Betsy completed her degree at the University of Oregon and has been playing with paint and filling sketch books for as long as she can remember. School field trips to the Met in NYC were her favorite outings and Betsy still enjoys visiting galleries which exhibit non-traditional works. When she gets the chance, Betsy loves to be alone and notice the simple magic that is constantly happening around us, like a meadowlark's song or snowflakes landing on eyelashes.
